A Long Path to Victory
Karissa Owens and Kelsey Campbell obtained a defense verdict on behalf of a hospital client following an 11-day trial in Palm Beach County.
The lawsuit stems from the death of a 52 year-old patient who died from a saddle pulmonary embolism less than 24 hours after his discharge from a 2016 hospitalization.
While admitted to the hospital, the patient refused a blood thinner ordered by the admitting doctor. He was eventually cleared to be released from the hospital, but later died in his home. An autopsy was performed several days following his death, which showed deep vein thrombosis in the right lower extremity and a massive clot in the lungs.
During trial, the surviving spouse requested damages in the range of $3 to $10 million. The jury deliberated for less then an hour and a half before returning a complete defense verdict.
Katie Gannon served as appellate counsel before and during this trial.
